Integrating Project Management and Change Management

One leverage point that eludes many implementation teams is the establishment of a tight link between the traditional technical project and the human side change plan.  Often this link is nothing more than a communication plan masquerading as a change plan.  It‘s doomed to failure.  Sometimes it consists of a technical project plan and a change plan running simultaneously though in parallel.  Both plans are discussed at the weekly project meeting, though as different and unrelated agenda items.  Indeed the technical plan is often perceived to be the “real work” and the change plan is “that soft human stuff.”  The most effective link is when the plans are blended.  The change plan is integrated as a set of deliverables in the technical plan.  Moreover, a repeatable set of change steps are imbedded in the achievement of all major technical milestones.  The latter approach is rare.  What’s the “state of the art” re blending the technical side with the human side?  Who is doing it and how?  If you’re not blending the two, why not?

Re: Integrating Project Management and Change Management

For the past year, I've been running change management plans parallel to the project plans. Although this isn't an ideal situation, I think it's a natural and necessary evolution to an integrated technical/change plan, because an organization needs to see and understand exactly what a change plan is. It's not an easy concept for most business managers or project managers to wrap their heads around, so once they understand and see it, it's much easier to integrate it with a project plan.

I'm at the stage where I am working with the head of our Project Management office to integrate the plans and I will be training the Project Managers on their role and how they need to incorporate change plans into project plans.
